Why abandon God? As strange as it may seem, many feel that they can do better on their own. Indeed, the world offers many alternative “salvations.” One common form of this is salvation-by-sex. An early twentieth century sex guru, Margaret Sanger, preached,
“That sexual restraint suppresses the activity of the sex glands and thus injures health and dulls the intellect. Thus science itself…supports sexual liberation.” (According to Colson and Pearcy, How Now Shall We Live? All of the following material comes from pages 237-244.)
However, one test for the viability of a theory is whether it works and is livable. “Sanger was married twice and had numerous lovers…She was addicted to the painkiller Demerol and obsessed with numerology, astrology, and psychics in a desperate attempt to find meaning. In her life, sexual liberation was not the high road to salvation that she had promised in her writing.”
The Darwinian, Alfred Kinsey, was another forceful advocate of sexual liberation. He claimed that “certain mammals are observed to have sexual contact between males, and even across species; therefore, he concluded, both homosexuality and bestiality are ‘part of the normal mammalian picture’ and are acceptable behavior for humans.” However, not all of Kinsey’s research seems to have been conducted in the halls of science:
“In Kinsey, Sex, and Fraud, researcher Judith Reisman argues convincingly that Kinsey’s research on child sexual responses could have been obtained only if he or his colleagues were actively engaged in the sexual molestation of children.”
Another “liberator” was Wilhelm Reich, a disciple of Freud. He argued that it was the guilt induced by traditional religion that has given rise to psychiatric disorders. According to psychiatrist Eustace Chesser, Reich believed that orgasm “is man’s only salvation, leading to the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.” However, Reich failed to enter this Kingdom himself:
“Reich demanded complete sexual freedom for himself and conducted multiple affairs, but he couldn’t stand the thought that his wife might live by the same sexual philosophy. His third wife writes that he was desperately jealous and forbade her from living as he did.”
Not exactly the ideal liberator! However, humanity has always tended to deify its own desires and to enthrone its lifestyle as the ultimate standard for everyone else, except perhaps for our spouses. The more guilt and shame that these behaviors cause us, the more we insist upon their surpassing virtue—no matter how absurd--and demonize those who disagree.
More recently, another set of “experts” have proposed a more “progressive” vehicle for sexual liberation—the kindergarten. The reason former sexual experiments have failed to overcome the guilt response is because society didn’t start early enough in sexualizing its children. LifeSiteNews.com (LSN, 10/17/07) reports,
“An Oslo pre-school teacher, backed by child psychologists, has suggested that kindergarten children be encouraged to ‘express’ their sexuality through ‘sex-play’ and games, including dancing naked and masturbating, in pre-school and day-care centres…Pia Friis, the respected operator of an Oslo kindergarten, told an interviewer that children should be able ‘to look at each other and examine each other's bodies. They can play doctor, play mother and father, dance naked and masturbate…But their sexuality must also be socialized, so they are not, for example, allowed to masturbate while sitting and eating.’”
Oddly, masturbating “while sitting and eating” is their one concern. Their gross irresponsibility is highlighted by LSN:
“In the US earlier this year, a report published by the American Psychological Association (APA) warned against the early sexualizing of young girls, especially through media and marketing. The APA task force found that teachers and parents are among the influences in the over-sexualization of children and that girls often end by seeing themselves as sexual objects. The results can include increased risks of depression, eating disorders and low self-esteem.”
In recent years, we’ve learned a lot about human nature, that we’re wired for all sorts of things including guilt and shame. Why then the optimism of changing through socialization something so intrinsically a part of us? Perhaps more importantly, why are so many Christians being duped by alternative salvations?
