I have been listening to one sermon by Walter Martin per day now for almost a week. I am determined to do this for 90 days. It has been wonderful! This morning I heard a sermon by Walter Martin entitled "Robert Schuller and the Cult of Self Esteem".
We are taught to love our neighbor as ourselves, so God expects us to love ourselves in a healthy, godly way. However, there is a difference between godly self-esteem and arrogant pride.
Robert Schuller said that Jesus did not call people sinners, and he was not going to call anyone a sinner either.
Well, let's see what the Bible says. In John 8:24 Jesus said unless you repent, you will die in your sins. He also told the most religious people of His day they were of their "father the devil." (John 8:44). So, the Jesus of the Bible did call people sinners.
Robert Schuller said that Jesus died to satisfy his ego. He had to get his ego under control. This is blasphemy. For full sermon by Walter Martin go to http://www.waltermartin.com/ and download "Robert Schuller and the Cult of Self Esteem."
Is "hell" an abstract place of no self esteem? According to Robert Schuller it is a state of mind. Hell is a place for all of eternity with lake of fire where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth according to the Bible, and anyone without Jesus as Savior is going there in rebellion from God. The beauty is we cannot save ourselves, and Jesus came to die in our place. The Gospel is not contingent on our self-esteem.
