LTW Update: Rio Grande Valley

Rosie happy to receive her new Bible from Janie
Jaime and Brittney come visit the table to hear more
about Jesus and how they can have a relationship with Him.

Update from Curt and Janie; January 2, 2010:

Well, the temperature today (42 degrees) was 11 degrees higher than last month as we started out for our New Year’s Table on Jackson St. Even with all of the Christmas and year-end activities, we were well-prepared with materials for January’s Table.

We’re not sure if it was the T.V. advertising or the incoming ‘Winter-Texans’ but there were bunches of shoppers!!!

There was an unusual interest by teens today. This is a tremendous joy!!! One boy took several of the ‘teen’ tracts. Another young lady showed a keen interest in “evolution” and took the tract “7 Modern-Day Scientists Who Oppose Evolution & Millions of Years” as well as the book Evolution – Fact or Fiction?. She explained she planned to show it to her geology teacher. She was cautioned that her teacher may not be real receptive to the information.

As always, there’s a certain amount of interest by Grandmas wanting to encourage their grandkids. Our coloring pages today were on "temptation," giving a good introduction to Adam and Eve and the meaning of 'sin’. One Grandma took copies for each of her 6 grandkids and most of what we had were handed out to the many children.

Then there was "Rosie"….What a delight….She was sooooo excited to receive a large print Bible!!!! She couldn’t stop hugging Janie and her new Bible, thanking God for His answer to prayer.

Little Jaime returned and was excited about bringing Dwayna’s “31 Quotes” to his teacher. Jaime received a children’s Bible last time, and today we talked a little about the seven days of creation in the very 1st verses of the Bible. He returned to the Table with his cousin, Brittany, and she also received a children’s Bible, as well as a CBH 2-month devotional. She shared with Janie her concern that her mom is going to move to Cuba with her boyfriend. Brittany didn’t want to go. We told her to pray every day, and talk to Jesus. (As the Bible says, “Let the little children come unto Me”). I reminded her to read the devotional and that God knows everything that’s going on in her life. [Here’s where this ‘great-grandma’ (Janie) felt ever so inadequate. I find myself praying for little Brittany a lot.]

Curt was kept busy with interest in the “Seeker Sensitive” movement, and several books were given with some discussion. One fellow stopped and said he "felt led to check out" the book on Who’s Driving the Purpose Driven Church? by James Sundquist. ( Curt wasn’t so sure the fellow knew what he was getting into.) Another fellow took Redefining Christianity by Bob DeWaay and also A Time of Departing by Ray Yungen.

Many adults were encouraged to read The Way of the Shepherd and Life After Death by Justin Peters. A few Spanish Bibles even disappeared.

What a wonderful way to start the NEW YEAR!!
