This summary comes from Patty, the leader for the Boulder outreach on Pearl Street. This is such an exciting location for a ministry of evangelism based on apologetics! I plan to fly out to work with her in the spring of 2011 I need to mail her stronger materials against evolution. We have some great CDs and books to give to evolutionists, and I will get more of those resources to her.
Dwayna,
I don't think I've written to thank you for the new materials you sent for the table. (We do already have the Roman Catholicism tracts on hand but the others were new.) I put them to use today in Boulder as I was there for 3 hours this afternoon. No one from my church was free to come for various last-minute reasons, but there were three Christians...who came to help, and I was so encouraged. They are all three new to street evangelism, having gone through the Way of the Master training recently, and they are motivated by concern for the fate of the lost.
It wasn't really busy at the table, but the few who stopped were mostly open to conversation about their religious beliefs and the gospel. Enrique is a believer from Mexico in Boulder for three months and needed a Bible in English so he could participate in a local Bible study.
Laura was a young adult with a Lutheran background but not so sure anymore what she believes. She took a Bible, too.
A homeless man came over to browse and said he was a "Wayist," which I hadn't heard of before but it sounded like a sect. He also said he and his wife read tarot cards as a way to earn money but it's only for entertainment, explaining they don't take it seriously. I told him there must be better ways to earn money that don't involve occult practices, but he said they were "permitted" to do it.
[I wrote her that a "Wayist" is probably someone in The Way International cult.--Dwayna]
A Spanish-speaking woman and her two teenage children stopped by and took a few books and tracts. She said they were Catholics, and I tried to emphasize the importance of following the teachings of the Bible above all, such as being saved by grace and not penance.
The most challenging conversation with with a man from Serbia, an atheist and evolutionist who is extremely well-read and was curious on what we had about intelligent design and evolution, just in case there was something new out there. He took a DVD on Mormonism and a couple of the evolution tracts and stayed to talk about 30 minutes. He said one of his best friends was an evangelical Christian, and they debated often. He wouldn't be sidetracked by his guilt of breaking God's law and facing hell but kept going back to the impossibility of the Bible being true, and how much science has proven we are not designed at all...I don't think we influenced him, but he certainly left me wanting to be better prepared to answer the most common objections and have at least a few things to ask him that he would not have considered.
Then, there was a young couple who said they were Quakers but they were also graduates of Naropa Institute (a Buddhist University in Boulder), and they had lots of questions that were similar to the atheist. Just like our sign says, there was certainly a lot of "free thinking" in Boulder today!
